WAYFINDING FOR A 4 BUILDING COMPLEX OF OVER 250,000 S.F ON VCU’S DOWNTOWN CAMPUS
StudioAmmons worked with the architects (BCW+H) and university design staff to analyze existing wayfinding and directional signage at their dental school which occupied a series of downtown buildings that had been tied together over the years with little coordination of public access, control points and orientation. In such a visually noisy environment, a strong and highly visible signage system was needed to command the attention of visitors who might be entering from one of several different streets and help them find their way through a facility that occupied an entire city block, to the appropriate visitor and patient service areas throughout the building. We developed a specific language for general building and public space orientation that becomes color coded signage system identifying departments and suites that visitors and patients could follow once they left their waiting rooms
