A new center for interpretive programs has been built at the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. At this prairie restoration site, the former Joliet Arsenal, a new kind of museum is emerging, and becoming a community, regional, and national resource. The seeds of a new and integrated approach are being developed for interpreting, from within the landscape, the relationship between the natural and cultural history of “place,” how our ancestors valued the land in the past, how the prairie restoration project takes a stand in the present, and what it means to be long-term stewards of the land for future generations.
