StudioAmmons worked with the City of Petersburg, The Petersburg Garden Club, and the Willcox Watershed Conservancy to develop a Management Plan, plan trails and signage, and develop marketing publications for the Lee Park Wildflower and bird sanctuary, a 300 acre public park in the heart of Petersburg, VA.
During the 1930s, through a remarkable Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, the women of the Petersburg Garden Club worked with African-American women of Petersburg to establish a 25 acre botanical preserve in Lee Park. Species were identified, habitats created, a herbarium collected, exquisite paintings executed, specimens planted and nurtured, and over ten miles of trails developed.
Motivated by the knowledge that the significant resources and history of Lee Park could be lost, The Petersburg Garden Club formed a partnership with the City of Petersburg in 1999 leading to the creation of the Willcox Watershed Conservancy established to restore and preserve Lee Park as a premier natural park for education and passive recreation benefitting the entire community and region. That same year, Lee Park was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as a unique site in which environmental conservation and women’s history come together.

MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR THE WILDFLOWER AND BIRD SANCTUARY
StudioAmmons developed a park management plan focused on the wildflower and bird sanctuary portion of the park. Working closely with Donna Ware, horticulturalist from William and Mary University, and Chris Ludwig, with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (VDCR) we worked to create a document that would be usable by and accessible to city officials as well as the organizational board members that provide oversight of the park and sanctuary.
